Nurture
School of Nurture
We have recently become a School of Nurture which aims to improve behaviour and attendance, alongside wellbeing. Before children can begin learning in the classroom, we want to ensure that they are ready. This means we consider their social and emotional wellbeing and ensure that children feel valued in our community.
There are six principles of nurture which are outlined in the image below.
Some of the ways we do this are listed below:
- Learning is understood developmentally
- Responding to the individual child where they are.
- The classroom offers a safe base
- Adults are reliable and consistent in their approach.
- The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing.
- Emphasis on listening and responding helps children to feel seen and valued.
- Language is a vital means of communication.
- Supporting children to use language as a way of putting their feelings into words.
- All behaviour is communication.
- What is this child trying to tell me? Check ins
- The importance of transition in children's lives.
- Consistent routine for transitions back into the classroom(soft starts)
