Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Easton
At Easton CE Primary School, we value the importance of language learning as a key part of a broad and balanced education. In line with the National Curriculum for England, we teach Spanish as our chosen Modern Foreign Language from Year 3 to Year 6, supporting our pupils to become confident communicators and respectful global citizens.
Intent:
- Promote a lifelong love of languages by nurturing curiosity, creativity, and enjoyment in learning Spanish.
- Develop pupils’ linguistic competence, enabling them to understand and express themselves in another language with increasing confidence and accuracy.
- Foster intercultural understanding, encouraging pupils to appreciate and respect the cultures, traditions, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking communities.
- Support personal development, including resilience, empathy, and communication skills, through meaningful language experiences.
- Lay strong foundations for future language learning in secondary school and beyond.
- We believe that learning a foreign language enriches pupils’ education and strengthens their understanding of the world. Through Spanish, our pupils gain not only practical language skills but also a broader cultural awareness that reflects the inclusive and diverse ethos of our school.
Implementation:
- Spanish is taught weekly to pupils in Years 3 to 6, with each class receiving a 30-minute lesson.
- The Language Angels scheme is used to deliver a structured and progressive curriculum.
- Lessons are designed to be engaging and accessible, with clear progression in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
- The teaching approach places a strong emphasis on speaking and listening.
- Pupils practise oral language through songs, games, role-play, and other interactive activities.
- Listening tasks support comprehension and pronunciation, while speaking activities build confidence and fluency.
- Reading and writing are introduced gradually to support oral development but remain secondary.
- Pupils are formally assessed each term using Language Angels’ tools to track progress in key skills.
- Teachers use both formal and informal assessments to inform planning and identify learning gaps.
- Cultural elements are embedded in lessons to promote awareness of Spanish-speaking countries and global citizenship.
